Malappuram: Complaints arose that the book 'Literary Criticism' which is part of the syllabus for BA English fourth semester under the University of Calicut was plagiarized. The first portion of the 100-page book was copied from another book, it is alleged.

The textbook 'Literary Criticism' jointly written by Dr K Pradeep Kumar, chairperson of English Board of Studies and Dr R Sreepriya, member of the board of studies, was published by the university.

However, some portions from the book 'An Introduction to English Criticism' written by B Prasad and published by McMillan in 1965 was copied without any change in the new book. Also the book did not give any credit to B Prasad.

When the original book is available in the market, the university need not publish a new book. Even the sub headings in the original book were copied without any change.

The book published by the university is considered as an additional qualification for the writers while considering for promotion. After 50 years, the original book will lose its copyright. However, when about 40 pages of a book is repeated as such in another book, it is unethical not to give the credit.
