Malappuram (Kerala): A giant eco-friendly Christmas tree made entirely of organic flowering plants has added a distinctive green touch to Christmas celebrations at Chungathara in Kerala’s Malappuram district, drawing widespread public attention.

The 30-foot-tall Christmas tree, measuring nearly eight feet in circumference, has been erected in front of a coconut products company at Kuttimunda. Crafted using approximately 2,800 organic flowering plants, the structure stands out as a rare and sustainable alternative to conventional artificial Christmas decorations.

Unlike plastic or synthetic installations, the Christmas tree has been created by carefully planting and nurturing organic saplings, blending festive cheer with a strong message of environmental responsibility and sustainable celebration. The initiative reflects a growing shift towards eco-conscious practices during festivals in Kerala.

Company owner Pappachan Munduvayal said the towering green structure was the result of the collective effort of nearly 15 people. He added that the idea of building an organic Christmas tree had been a long-cherished dream shared by both the management and employees, which has now been successfully realised.

The unique Christmas installation has quickly become a major attraction in the region, with locals, families and passers-by stopping to admire the display and capture photographs and selfies. The green Christmas tree has also gained significant traction on social media platforms for its innovative and sustainable approach to festive celebrations.

Christmas, observed on December 25 every year, commemorates the birth of Jesus Christ and symbolises messages of peace, love and harmony. The festival is celebrated worldwide with joy and compassion, as families come together to share meals, exchange gifts and sing Christmas carols. Churches hold special prayers, creating an atmosphere of faith, hope and goodwill, making Christmas one of the most significant festivals for Christians across the globe.
