Kozhikode: A woman from Kerala is among the nearly 300 researchers on the team led by American-Belgian particle physicist Prof. Francis Halzen, whose research has been recognised with the Nobel Prize in Physics. V. Aswathy Gopal, a native of Chalappuram in Kozhikode, is the Malayali researcher associated with the team.

Aswathy has been involved in research on the detection of astrophysical neutrinos for more than five years. Two of her findings are also included in the Nobel-winning research, according to the information available. Several other Indians are part of the team.

She joined Halzen's team after moving to the University of Wisconsin–Madison in the US as a postdoctoral researcher.

Aswathy completed her schooling up to Plus Two at Providence School in Kozhikode. She earned a bachelor's degree in physics from Devagiri College and a master's degree from IIT Madras. She subsequently completed her PhD at the Karlsruhe Institute of Technology in Germany before joining the University of Wisconsin–Madison.

She is the daughter of P. Balagopal and Rashmi, who live at 'Swasthi' in Keerthi Nagar, Chalappuram. Her husband is Ashiq Sasindran.
