The formal award ceremonies, featuring gold medals and $1.2 million prizes, take place on December 10.

This year's Nobel Prize announcements carry notable links to Kerala, spanning cosmic physics and chemistry research. In physics, Kozhikode-born researcher V Aswathi Balagopal contributed key findings to Belgian physicist Francis Halzen's Nobel-winning project on astrophysical neutrinos. Meanwhile, French scientist Henri B Kagan, who co-won the chemistry accolade, shares a long-standing academic relationship with Mahatma Gandhi University in Kottayam.
Crucial findings in particle physics
Aswathi, a postdoctoral scholar at the University of Wisconsin-Madison, worked within Halzen's international team to trace cosmic particles using Antarctic ice. Having studied at Devagiri College in Kozhikode before earning her doctorate in Germany, her own research insights were featured in the award-winning paper. Reflecting on the breakthrough, she indicated that the practical benefits of neutrino studies for everyday people would unfold over coming decades.
Halzen's broader research group brings together roughly 300 international experts searching for deep-space secrets.
A memorable visit to Kottayam
The chemistry honour for Kagan also resonates across Kerala's academic community. Kagan visited Kottayam in August 2010 for a two-week lecture series, staying at the university guest house and engaging warmly with students. During the visit, he showed keen interest in local traditions, taking a backwater boat trip and asking detailed questions about eating meals off banana leaves.
Former colleagues remembered Kagan as a humble mentor who worked daily in his laboratory even at age 80. Academics at Mahatma Gandhi University described his Nobel win as long-overdue recognition, as he had narrowly missed out in 2001 because rules restricted the prize to three people. The formal award ceremonies, featuring gold medals and $1.2 million prizes, take place on December 10.
