Kalpetta, Wayanad: In light of reduced rainfall in the district, District Collector DR Meghashree, who also serves as Chairperson of the District Disaster Management Authority (DDMA) in Wayanad, has issued an order lifting the entry restrictions to Kuruva Island, a 950-acre protected river delta.

Entry to this popular tourist spot will now be permitted, but only in strict adherence to all safety protocols and regulations.

The constraints on mechanised soil excavation have also been lifted. However, approval from the relevant departments will only be granted if all safety standards and legal provisions are strictly followed during the use of machinery for soil excavation, the order states.

Legal action will be taken if soil is deposited in areas governed by wetland protection laws or along streams. Should any accidents occur as a result of soil removal, full responsibility will lie with the department that issued the permission.

Additionally, soil excavation using machinery must be suspended during heavy rainfall and whenever the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issues orange or red alerts.
