Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange and Yellow alerts across Kerala as active monsoon conditions are expected to bring heavy rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds until July 2, prompting authorities to warn residents and fishermen to remain cautious.
Kerala is likely to witness widespread rainfall over the coming days as the southwest monsoon remains active across the state. The India Meteorological Department (IMD), along with the Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA), has issued weather alerts for all districts, warning of heavy to very heavy rainfall, thunderstorms, lightning and strong winds through July 2.

The latest weather system includes an upper air cyclonic circulation over the central-east Arabian Sea off the Maharashtra coast, while another cyclonic circulation continues over northern Telangana and adjoining areas. According to meteorologists, these systems are strengthening the monsoon flow over Kerala and are expected to trigger intense rainfall across several districts.
Orange Alert: Districts likely to receive very heavy rainfall
An Orange Alert indicates the possibility of very heavy rainfall between 115.6 mm and 204.4 mm within 24 hours.
- June 28: Idukki, Ernakulam, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod
- June 29: Kannur, Kasaragod
- June 30: Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur, Kasaragod
- July 1: Kannur, Kasaragod
Yellow Alert: Heavy rain expected in several districts
A Yellow Alert signifies heavy rainfall between 64.5 mm and 115.5 mm within 24 hours.
- June 28: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram
- June 29: Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad
- June 30: Idukki, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram
- July 1: Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad
- July 2: Malappuram, Kozhikode, Wayanad, Kannur,Kasaragod
Thunderstorms and strong winds expected
The IMD has also warned that isolated areas across Kerala may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and strong winds reaching 40–50 kmph from June 28 to July 2.
Residents have been advised to remain indoors during thunderstorms, avoid standing beneath trees or near electric poles, and postpone unnecessary travel during periods of intense rainfall.
Fishermen advised not to venture into the sea
The IMD has prohibited fishing along the Kerala, Karnataka and Lakshadweep coasts from June 28 to July 2 due to rough sea conditions and strong winds.
Authorities have urged fishermen to strictly follow the advisory and avoid venturing into the sea until conditions improve.
Rain already causing disruption
Heavy rain has continued across several parts of Kerala since the early hours of Sunday, leading to waterlogging and minor damage in some areas.
In Beypore, a fishing boat capsized due to strong winds near the breakwater. Four fishermen were rescued safely.
According to the IMD's latest radar observations, districts including Kozhikode may continue to receive moderate to heavy rainfall along with gusty winds over the next few hours.
Possible impact of the heavy rainfall
Authorities have warned that the continuing rainfall could result in:
- Waterlogging in urban and low-lying areas
- Localised flooding near rivers and streams
- Landslides and mudslides in hilly regions
- Falling trees and power outages due to strong winds
- Traffic congestion and poor visibility
- Damage to weak structures and temporary shelters
- Risks to livestock and agricultural activities
Residents living in landslide-prone regions have been asked to remain alert and follow instructions issued by district authorities.
Safety advisory
The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority has urged people to:
- Avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain.
- Stay indoors during thunderstorms and lightning.
- Keep away from swollen rivers, streams and waterlogged roads.
- Follow official weather updates and emergency advisories.
- Move to safer locations immediately if local authorities issue evacuation warnings.
With multiple weather systems strengthening the southwest monsoon, Kerala is expected to continue receiving widespread rainfall over the next five days. Authorities are closely monitoring the situation and have advised the public to remain vigilant until weather conditions improve.
