Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued an orange alert for Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, and Idukki districts on Saturday.
Additionally, a yellow alert is in effect in Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Alappuzha, Kottayam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, and Kozhikode districts, with expected rainfall ranging from 64.5 to 115.5 mm.
A yellow alert is in place for six districts --Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, Pathanamthitta, Idukki, Thrissur, and Palakkad-- on November 3. Rainfall is expected to continue in various parts of the state until November 8.
The IMD has also warned of squally weather along the South Kerala coast, with wind speeds reaching 35-45 km/h and gusts up to 55 km/h. Fishermen have been advised not to venture out to sea.
Thiruvananthapuram witnessed intense rainfall on Sunday, submerging homes, shops, and roads in areas like Kazhakoottam and Vizhinjam. Traffic was disrupted across the city due to waterlogged streets, as floodwaters entered various houses and an Anganwadi in Kazhakoottam.
In response to rising water levels, four shutters of the Peppara dam were raised by 10 centimeters each, and the shutters at Aruvikkara dam were lifted to 150 centimeters.
Safety alert for public and private properties
Residents in areas vulnerable to landslides, mudslides, and flash floods are urged to relocate to safer locations, especially those along riverbanks and near dams. Authorities recommend opening relief camps in high-risk areas to facilitate safe daytime relocation. Local government and revenue officials are available to assist residents in disaster-prone zones.
Those living in structures with inadequate roofing or weak infrastructure should take extra caution, especially with the anticipated strong winds that pose risks from falling trees, poles, and utility lines. Residents are encouraged to report hazardous conditions to local authorities for prompt action.
Authorities have advised the public to avoid crossing rivers or entering bodies of water during heavy rain. Activities such as swimming, fishing, and sightseeing at water bodies, including taking selfies on bridges or gathering in groups, are strictly prohibited. Non-essential travel should be postponed, and visits to waterfalls, reservoirs, and hilly areas are discouraged until the alert is lifted.
Drivers are urged to exercise caution while traveling on roads near water bodies and to avoid flood-prone roads. Increased vigilance is also advised on roads undergoing repairs, as road accidents may surge under the intense rainfall conditions.
To prevent accidents, potentially hazardous trees, poles, signboards, and walls on both public and private properties should be secured. Fallen trees and other obstructions should be cleared, and any dangerous structures should be reported to authorities to ensure public safety.
