Thiruvananthapuram: The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has forecast widespread rainfall across Kerala over the next five days, issuing an Orange Alert for Kannur and Kasaragod on July 1 and Yellow Alerts for several other districts as the southwest monsoon remains active.

Kerala is set to witness widespread rainfall over the next five days as the India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued Orange and Yellow alerts for several districts between July 1 and July 5.

The department has warned that heavy to very heavy rainfall, accompanied by thunderstorms, is likely in parts of the state as monsoon activity intensifies.

Orange Alert for Kannur and Kasaragod today

For July 1, Kannur and Kasaragod have been placed under an Orange Alert, indicating the possibility of isolated heavy to very heavy rainfall.

According to the IMD, very heavy rainfall means 115.6 mm to 204.4 mm of rain within 24 hours.

Meanwhile, Alappuzha, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Palakkad, Malappuram, Kozhikode and Wayanad are under a Yellow Alert, where isolated heavy rainfall of 64.5 mm to 115.5 mm is expected.

KaWaCHaM siren to be tested today

The Kerala State Disaster Management Authority (KSDMA) will also conduct a trial of the KaWaCHaM (Kerala Warnings, Crisis and Hazard Management) emergency warning siren between 4 pm and 4.30 pm in various locations across Kannur and Kasaragod.

Officials clarified that the siren is part of a preparedness exercise and does not indicate an actual disaster. The drill is intended to familiarise residents with the emergency warning system and assess its operational readiness.

Safety advisory for the public

Authorities have urged people living in landslide-prone, flood-prone and riverbank areas to stay alert and follow evacuation instructions if issued.

Residents have also been advised to avoid unnecessary travel during heavy rain, stay away from rivers, waterfalls and other water bodies, avoid driving through flooded roads, and remain cautious of strong winds that could uproot trees or damage weak structures.

Kerala experiences frequent heavy rainfall during the southwest monsoon, increasing the risk of flooding, landslides and waterlogging, particularly in hilly and low-lying regions. The IMD's five-day forecast allows local authorities to prepare emergency response measures while giving residents time to take necessary precautions as weather conditions are expected to remain unstable through the week.
