Thiruvananthapuram: Heavy rains in the last week of July have led to a massive loss of Rs 852.78 crore for the Kerala Public Works Department. The downpour severely affected the northern districts of Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod, and Wayanad, which together accounted for approximately Rs 832 crore of the total loss. The southern districts experienced damages amounting to Rs 20 crore.

The torrential rains have caused extensive damage to roads, bridges, and buildings. To address the urgent need for reconstruction, efforts are underway to secure funding from NABARD (National Bank for Agriculture and Rural development) and the Rebuild Kerala initiative.

A committee, headed by the chief engineer of the PWD, has assessed the damage across the affected districts and presented its findings to the government. According to the report, the road sector alone suffered a loss of Rs 532 crore. The report estimates that Rs 780.01 crore will be needed to repair the damaged roads, with specific allocations including Rs 20 lakh for National Highways, Rs 40 lakh for buildings, Rs 34.56 crore for bridges, and Rs 37.61 crore for the Kerala Road Fund Board.

Rs 15 crore is earmarked for the restoration of the Chooralmala bridge alone in Wayanad, based on the current estimates.
