Thiruvananthapuram: A KSRTC Super Fast bus operating between Kannur and Munnar generated a mere Rs 355 in revenue despite covering around 397 kilometres, with only three passengers travelling on the service.

The massive loss, with earnings failing to even cover the basic cost of diesel, has prompted KSRTC to launch a detailed inquiry.

The bus had been sent from the Munnar depot to Kannur as part of additional services operated during the Onam season. The move was aimed at addressing the heavy rush of passengers reported in Kannur district during the festival period.

After the Onam season ended, a driver and conductor were sent from the depot to bring the bus back to Munnar. They travelled with the ticket machine, as the bus was scheduled to return to its home depot.

Usually, return journeys following holidays see a significant increase in passenger demand. However, officials were surprised when they checked the bus's revenue after it reached the Munnar depot.

The bus had travelled approximately 397 kilometres but collected only Rs 355, with just three passengers using the service.

Given the unusually low passenger numbers and revenue, KSRTC has launched a comprehensive investigation into the service.

The inquiry will examine the procedures followed in approving the service, as well as the assessment of passenger demand and the availability of travellers on the route.
