Kerala is facing a sharp rise in summer temperatures, with the India Meteorological Department (IMD) warning of extreme heat conditions across multiple districts. Palakkad is expected to touch nearly 40 °C.

Authorities in Pathanamthitta have taken preventive action by banning summer vacation classes in schools and tuition centres to protect students from heat-related risks.

According to the IMD forecast, temperatures across Kerala will remain significantly above normal between April 22 and 24, 2026, with some districts experiencing intense heat and humidity.

Palakkad – up to 40°C (isolated places)

Kollam – around 39°C

Kottayam – around 38°C

Alappuzha, Pathanamthitta, Ernakulam, Thrissur, Malappuram, Kozhikode, Kannur, Kasaragod – around 37°C

Thiruvananthapuram – around 36°C

IMD has also warned that temperatures will be 3–4°C above normal levels, increasing the risk of heat-related health issues.

Hot and humid conditions are expected across most districts, excluding hilly regions.

Pathanamthitta bans summer vacation classes to protect students

Even as the heat intensifies across Kerala, Pathanamthitta District Collector S. Prem Krishnan has ordered a ban on summer vacation classes in all schools up to higher secondary level, including tuition centres.

Educational institutions have been allowed to conduct online classes if required, but physical summer sessions have been suspended as a precaution.

The official circular highlights growing health concerns due to rising temperatures and humidity.

Rainfall forecast offers partial relief across Kerala

Despite the heat warning, IMD has also forecast light to moderate rainfall in several districts on select dates, which may bring temporary relief.

Authorities have also issued preventive measures to reduce heat-related risks, especially for schoolchildren.
