Thiruvananthapuram: The Central Meteorological Department has issued a warning regarding a potential heatwave as extreme heat continues across Kerala. The alert is specifically in effect for Palakkad, Thrissur and Kollam districts and will remain active through Friday.

A heatwave is a rare phenomenon in Kerala. Historically, it was recorded in Palakkad and Thrissur in 2016, and in Palakkad and Kozhikode in 2024. While the heat persists, relief is expected from April 27, with forecasts predicting summer rains that are likely to intensify in the following days. Until April 26, temperatures in 12 districts are expected to remain 3–4°C above average.

Holiday declared in Kollam and Thrissur

With temperatures expected to soar up to 40°C, District Collectors have declared a holiday this Friday for all educational institutions, including professional colleges, in Kollam and Thrissur districts.

What is a heatwave?

A heatwave is officially declared when the following conditions are met for two consecutive days:

* Temperatures in at least two stations in a region stay 4.5°C or more above the normal range.

* Temperatures reach 40°C or higher in plains.

* Temperatures reach 37°C or higher in coastal areas.
