Kochi: A notable number of elderly citizens in Kerala face abuse, primarily from their sons, according to 2023-24 annual report by the Department of Social Justice’s National Helpline for Senior Citizens (Elder Line). The report reveals that 38 percent of elderly experience mistreatment at the hands of their sons, while 15% suffer abuse from daughters-in-law.

The abuse reported includes physical and mental mistreatment as well as neglect.

The findings are based on complaints received by Elder Line during the last financial year. The report highlights that 43 percent of seniors experience neglect, 28 percent face physical harm and 21 percent endure verbal abuse.

The age group most affected is between 65 and 79, with 62 percent of individuals in this category reporting mistreatment. The primary reason for such behaviour is property-related disputes, accounting for 22 percent of cases, while 30 percent are attributed to other causes.

The perpetrators are predominantly aged between 31 and 50. The report notes that some cases were resolved through phone interventions, while others required action by field officers.

During the last financial year, Elder Line received a total of 2,11,108 calls. Most callers sought support for inquiries, guidance and emotional assistance. Among the callers, 60 percent were men and 40 percent were women. The highest number of calls came from Thiruvananthapuram, followed by Ernakulam.
