Unable to endure the alleged abuse, Begum said she escaped from her employer's residence and sought refuge at the Indian Embassy in Muscat.

New Delhi: A 26-year-old woman from Hyderabad has alleged that she was subjected to abuse, forced to work long hours without pay and denied basic necessities after travelling to Oman for a housemaid job promised by a recruitment agent.
Shabnam Begum said she travelled to Muscat on March 26 after a local recruitment agent assured her of employment as a domestic worker.
In a self-recorded video sent to Hyderabad politician and Majlis Bachao Tehreek leader Amjed Ullah Khan, she alleged that she was made to work 12 to 15 hours a day and has not received any salary for more than three months.
"They also didn't give me a mobile phone for a month and a half," she said in the emotional appeal.
The 26-year-old further alleged that she was "tortured" and "beaten", and was denied proper food during her stay.
Unable to endure the alleged abuse, Begum said she escaped from her employer's residence and sought refuge at the Indian Embassy in Muscat.
She also claimed that her recruitment agents had taken away her passport and appealed to Amjed Ullah Khan to "save" her.
Sharing her appeal on X, Khan said Begum had been lured to Muscat with the promise of a monthly salary of 200 Omani riyals (around ₹50,000) as a housemaid.
"After reaching Oman, she was allegedly forced to work in different houses for 12-15 hours daily, denied proper food and accommodation, and was not paid any salary for four months," Khan wrote.
He said Begum's family has urged External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar to direct the Indian Embassy in Muscat to ensure her safety and facilitate her immediate return to Hyderabad.
Responding to Khan's post, the Indian Embassy in Muscat said it had taken "cognisance of the matter."
The embassy added that the issue was being "taken up at appropriate levels."
