Malappuram: A daring underwater feat by the Indian Navy in the Andaman and Nicobar Islands on August 3 has earned a Guinness World Record, bringing pride to Kerala as well. Jibin, from Chulliyode in Pookkottumpadam, Nilambur, was part of the team that carried out the record-breaking performance despite not being a member of the Navy.

The team created the world’s largest human pyramid underwater at a depth of 73 feet. The participants balanced themselves one above another and maintained the pyramid formation for three minutes. They then unfurled the 60-by-40-foot national flag underwater.

The Navy’s objective was to showcase the Andaman Islands as one of the safest diving destinations in the world and encourage tourists to explore scuba diving there.

Jibin, an experienced scuba diving professional, also recently received an award from Andaman Governor D K Joshi.

From a diving enthusiast to a record holder

Jibin developed an interest in diving and travelled to Thiruvananthapuram to undergo professional scuba diving training. He later worked as a scuba diver with various tour operators.

While working as a diver, he came across the Indian Navy’s invitation for participants in the Andaman event and applied. He underwent one month of intensive training before taking part in the record-setting underwater performance.

Jibin is son of Binu Eettivala and Sheeja from Nilambur.
