Alappuzha: The daytime temperatures in Kerala are expected to rise by a few degrees above normal on Monday, as the state experiences warmer conditions following the Thulavarsham (secondary monsoon) rainfall. The Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) has warned of an increase in daytime heat, despite the possibility of rain in certain areas.

Kerala is facing a rise in daytime temperatures, with the IMD predicting a 1-3°C increase in various districts on Monday. The heat is being driven by high temperatures and humid air, which is making the weather uncomfortable for residents. The rise in temperatures is expected to continue even if there is rainfall in some areas.

Record heat in December

In December, Kerala recorded its highest temperature in the country. The hottest temperature, 37.4°C, was recorded at Kannur airport on December 31. For six consecutive days from December 14 to 19, Kannur experienced the highest temperatures.

Higher temperatures were recorded in Kozhikode, Thiruvananthapuram, and Punalur on the 22, 23, and 26 of the month, respectively. Kannur recorded the highest temperatures during the first two days of January. While Ernakulam, Pathanamthitta, and Kottayam districts also experienced high temperatures in recent days, the heat was most intense in North Kerala.

Yellow alert issued for rain

Although a cyclone near Sri Lanka is expected to bring isolated rain to Kerala until January 16, the rain will not be enough to cool down the daytime temperatures. There are chances of rain in districts like Kozhikode, Wayanad, Malappuram, and Palakkad on January 14 and 15, with some areas in Kannur also likely to experience rainfall.

For the first time in 2025, the IMD has issued a yellow alert for heavy rain in Kerala. This alert has been issued for Thiruvananthapuram, Kollam, and Pathanamthitta on January 15. It is uncommon to issue a yellow alert for heavy rain in January. Rain is also predicted in all districts starting Monday.
