Thiruvananthapuram: Kerala Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan has called on the Union Government to take strict action against agencies that recruit Indian citizens and send them to dangerous conflict zones, such as Russia and Ukraine. Speaking to the press on Wednesday, the CM described the death of a Keralite recruited by the Russian military as "most unfortunate."

The CM expressed concern that certain individuals were deceiving people and recruiting them into foreign militaries. "The opinion of the state government is that strong action should be taken on this matter," he said, urging both the Centre and state governments to work together to address the issue.

The death of Binil TB, an electrician from Thrissur, who was recruited by the Russian military, has drawn attention to this issue. Binil was killed in Russia’s ongoing conflict with Ukraine, and another individual from Kerala was injured. The CM’s statement comes as India has raised the issue with Russia.

India demands immediate release of recruited nationals

The Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) confirmed that the Indian government has strongly raised the matter with Russia. Following the death of the Kerala native, India has reiterated its demand for the early discharge of all Indian nationals recruited by the Russian military. Another Indian national, also recruited by Russia, has been injured and is currently receiving medical treatment in Moscow.
