Ernakulam: In an bizarre incident at Piravom, a guest worker was accommodated in a kennel for a monthly rent of Rs 500. The incident occurred at a house in Puratharakkulam near Piravom Police Station.

Shyamsundar (37), hailing from Murshidabad, Bengal, opted to rent a kennel attached to a private businessman's house near Puratharakkulam. The spacious kennel, equipped with grills on its sides, served as his living space for the past three months, where he cooked meals on gas and slept.

After the matter gained attention, local authorities including police and public representatives intervened. Shyamsundar was then moved to a rented house in Piravom town, where his brother-in-law resides.

The kennel was part of an old house that had been rented out after the private owner relocated. Presently, two families, including guest workers, are residing in the old house.

Health department officials inspected the kennel following a tip-off from a local resident. Municipal officials and police also visited the site. Shyamsundar was taken for a medical examination at the taluk hospital, though he reportedly has no health issues.

The police are deliberating on what actions, if any, to take since Shyamsundar chose to live in a space of his own accord. The police took a statement from Shyamsundar, but currently, no legal case has been filed against anyone involved. MLA Anoop Jacob, Municipal Chairperson Adv. July Sabu, Deputy Chairperson KP Salim, and municipal councilors also visited the scene to assess the situation.
