Kannur/Kollam/Ernakulam: An elderly woman died after being bitten by a snake in Kannur. The deceased has been identified as Nabeesa (65), a native of Kallad. She was bitten by the snake two days ago while cleaning the surroundings of her house. It is reported that she did not realise at the time that it was a venomous snake.

After the bite, Nabeesa went inside her room and took rest. She was taken to the hospital only after she began experiencing blurred vision and physical weakness. By the time she was admitted, her condition had worsened.

She was later shifted to a ventilator. The snakebite had occurred on Friday evening. Although she was administered 30 doses of anti-venom after being hospitalised, her life could not be saved. It is reported that the snake belonged to the “Vellikkettan” (krait) species.

In Raman Kulangara, Kollam, a worker was bitten by a snake while cleaning a yard. The victim, Sudevan, a native of Raman Kulangara, was bitten on Sunday morning while working in the compound of a house near Sangeetha Junction. The snake bit him on his leg.

He was bitten by a viper snake. He was immediately rushed to the Kollam District Hospital, where doctors administered anti-venom. Hospital authorities said he is currently under observation and his condition is satisfactory.

Health experts point out that the first hour after a snakebite—the “golden hour”—is extremely critical. They advise not to panic and to reach a hospital as quickly as possible. Officials also stated that anti-snake venom is currently available in all taluk hospitals.

In Cherai, Ernakulam, a tourist was also bitten by a snake. The victim, Sharmila, a native of Coimbatore, had arrived to stay at a resort. She was bitten on her toe. She was first admitted to Paravur Taluk Hospital and later shifted to a private hospital in Manjaly for further treatment. The species of the snake has not yet been identified.
