Kerala has launched a statewide action plan to eliminate snakebite deaths and disabilities by 2030, with stronger emergency care, better access to anti-snake venom and public safety measures.

Thiruvananthapuram: The Kerala government has launched a comprehensive action plan aimed at bringing snakebite-related deaths and disabilities in the state down to zero by 2030. The Health Department issued an order approving the plan after snakebite was declared a notifiable disease under the state’s public health law.
The programme follows a ‘One Health’ approach, bringing together the Health, Forest, Local Self-Government, Education, Agriculture and Animal Husbandry departments.

As part of the plan, authorities will ensure the availability of anti-snake venom at hospitals across the state, strengthen referral networks, improve emergency treatment facilities and provide specialised training for healthcare workers.
A hotspot mapping exercise will also be carried out by combining data from the Health and Forest departments to identify areas where snakebites are reported more frequently.
The action plan also includes a 24-hour snakebite helpline, WhatsApp support from medical experts and improved ambulance services to ensure timely treatment for victims.
Healthcare facilities ranging from primary health centres to medical colleges will be strengthened, along with expanded laboratory testing capabilities.
The government also plans to introduce snakebite safety guidelines in schools and childcare centres. The measures will include improving cleanliness around premises, ensuring building safety, training teachers and students, and strengthening emergency response systems.
