Continuous rainfall and waterlogging have triggered a spike in snakebite cases across Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district, with 20 people bitten in a single night and three deaths reported over the past five days.

Continuous rainfall and widespread waterlogging have triggered a surge in snakebite cases in Uttar Pradesh's Hathras district, where 20 people were bitten in different areas in a single night, creating panic among residents.
According to health officials, all the injured were taken to nearby hospitals for treatment. Patients in critical condition were referred to the district hospital, while doctors said most of those admitted are now out of danger after receiving anti-snake venom.
Medical experts said the persistent rain has forced snakes out of their burrows, pushing them into residential areas and agricultural fields. The increased human-snake interaction has led to a sharp rise in snakebite incidents across the district.
The health department has urged people to remain vigilant, particularly during the night.
Residents have been advised to carry flashlights while stepping outdoors, use mosquito nets while sleeping, keep homes clean, and seek immediate medical treatment in case of a snakebite instead of relying on traditional remedies.
Officials said at least three people have died due to snakebites in Hathras over the past five days, while several others continue to receive treatment at the district hospital.
Waterlogging in low-lying areas is believed to have displaced snakes, increasing the risk in villages and residential localities.
Authorities have directed all Community Health Centres (CHCs) and Primary Health Centres (PHCs) to maintain adequate stocks of anti-snake venom. Meanwhile, the India Meteorological Department has forecast more rainfall across several districts of Uttar Pradesh in the coming days, prompting officials to continue precautionary measures.
