Thiruvananthapuram: With cyber frauds rising across India, the Indian Cybercrime Coordination Centre (I4C) has introduced new measures to protect the public.

A platform has been developed, allowing individuals to verify suspicious phone numbers, social media accounts, and email addresses directly through the website www.cybercrime.gov.in

How the system works

Users can check whether a phone number, email, or social media account has been flagged for digital fraud. If the system identifies the input as fraudulent, it immediately issues a warning. This database is regularly updated with information collected from state police departments and investigative agencies.

The public can also contribute to this initiative by reporting fraudulent websites, WhatsApp numbers, Telegram handles, phone numbers, email addresses, and social media profiles. Evidence or explanations supporting their reports can also be uploaded on the portal. This user-submitted data is integrated into the system, enhancing the authenticity and its ability to identify frauds.

Alarming rise in cyber fraud

In just 10 months, cybercriminals have reportedly extorted over Rs 800 crore from individuals in Kerala. Across India, the amount extorted by these fraudsters is estimated at around Rs 20,000 crore.

Investigations have revealed that much of the stolen money goes to fraudsters operating from China, Bangkok, Hong Kong and Russia. The I4C has identified and received information about 20 foreign centres where fraudulent funds are withdrawn.
