Kannur: After Government Brennen College in Thalassery fell outside the top 100 in the National Institutional Ranking Framework (NIRF) 2024 list, Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan instructed the college to take steps to enhance its ranking.

The Chief Minister personally reached out to the college principal after learning that the institution's rank had risen to 113, up from 115 last year, though it had not achieved a spot in the Top 100. He has requested a face-to-face meeting with the principal on August 23.

Thiruvananthapuram University College was ranked 22nd, Thiruvananthapuram Government College for Women at 49th, Ernakulam Maharaja's College at 53rd, and Palakkad Government Victoria College at 84th. The college is situated in Vijayan's constituency of Dharmadam.

These are the government colleges from Kerala that made it to the top 100. Interestingly, 12 aided colleges from Kerala also ranked within the top 100. Government Victoria College, Palakkad, made a significant leap from 116th last year to 83rd this year. In light of this situation, Chief Minister Vijayan contacted the principal of Brennen College to enquire about the reasons behind the institution's failure to reach the top 100 rankings. Meanwhile, Vijayan will meet the principal in person to address the matter.

The NIRF rankings are based on assessments conducted by the Ministry of Human Resource Development, evaluating colleges on Global Education Quality Indicators. A total of 3,400 colleges were considered for this year's rankings.

Since 2016, over Rs 50 crore has been invested in the development of Brennen College, resulting in the construction of new academic blocks, modernised libraries, hostels, and other facilities. Despite these improvements, the college has been without a full-time principal for the past year and a half, with the vice principal currently overseeing operations. Brennen College offers 19 undergraduate and 13 postgraduate courses across 22 departments.

Despite being ranked outside the top 100 rankings, Brennen College holds the highest rank within Kannur University. J. Vasanthi, the principal in charge at Brennen College, said that preparations will be made to address the shortcomings and ensure continued progress.
