Alappuzha: Binoy Viswam has been elected as the State Secretary of the CPI. The decision was made at the party’s State Conference held in Alappuzha. Following the death of Kanam Rajendran, Binoy Viswam, who was then a Rajya Sabha member, took over as State Secretary on December 10, 2023. However, this is the first time he is officially assuming the position through a State Conference.

Currently, he is also a member of the CPI Central Secretariat and the working president of AITUC. To eliminate factionalism within the party, certain exclusions were made while selecting members to the State Council. Shubhesh Sudhakaran, a loyalist of Kanam Rajendran and former AISF state secretary, was left out. In Idukki, K K Sivaraman was excluded, while E S Bijimol was included as a special invitee. K M Dinakaran and Kamala Sadanandan, who were involved in the phone controversy linked to the State Secretary, were also included in the council. The CPI State Conference will conclude on Friday.

Binoy Viswam enjoyed the complete support of the old Kanam faction, led by Ministers K Rajan and P Prasad, National Executive member P Santosh Kumar and Assistant Secretary P P Sunir. The old Ismail faction leaders, including V S Sunil Kumar and P S Supal, also supported the continuation of Binoy Viswam as State Secretary.
