Thiruvananthapuram: Chief minister Pinarayi Vijayan has asked MPs from Kerala to take a unanimous stand in Parliament against the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC).
The chief minister made the request in a meeting with MPs ahead of the monsoon session of the Parliament, which begins on July 20.

He said that the UCC is a divisive issue that could create communal tensions in the country. He also pointed out that the UCC had not been discussed with the people of India, and that it would be undemocratic to impose it without their consent.
The CM said that Kerala is a secular state with a long history of religious tolerance. He urged MPs to represent the views of Keralites in Parliament and to oppose the UCC.
In addition to the UCC, the Chief Minister also raised the issue of airfares from Gulf countries to Kerala. He said that there has been an exorbitant increase in airfares during the Onam season, which is causing hardship for non-resident Keralites who want to visit their home state.
The CM has written to the Union Aviation Minister to request that the government take steps to reduce airfares. He has also asked the central government to allow Kerala to operate chartered flights during the Onam season.
Ministers, the chief secretary, and department secretaries also attended the meeting.
