Why did Ratan Tata find himself as Clint Eastwood while reshaping the conglomerate?
Tributes are pouring in for Ratan Tata, the former Tata Group chairman, who passed away on Wednesday. His contributions in various fraternities are being discussed.
Interestingly, Tata once recounted his early career experiences and the challenges he faced in reshaping the sprawling conglomerate. During a conversation at the Stanford Graduate School of Business in 2013, he used an analogy of being in the shoes of roles played by the iconic actor Clint Eastwood in popular films to describe the initial days of his chairmanship of the company. He shared candid insights about the initial hurdles of his tenure and the internal resistance he encountered from established leaders within the organisation.
"I had two problems," he stated, reflecting on the complexities of leadership. "One was with the actual market problems of a large business house that had operated very traditionally. The other was internal to the company, with several titans who didn’t want any change to take place," he said in a fireside chat with Charles Atkins, then a second-year MBA student at the Stanford Graduate School of Business, as part of their ‘View From The Top’ speaker series.
“The first five years were akin to Clint Eastwood...which tended to be filled with trying to get these elderly, very prominent people out of the way. It was not done with bullets; it was done with persuasion,” he said.
It may be noted that Clint Eastwood's movie roles, such as those in The Good, the Bad and the Ugly, Dirty Harry, and Unforgiven, often depict him as a tough, persuasive character who navigates complex situations with shrewdness and determination. While he is not specifically known for cracking deals in the business sense, his characters frequently exhibit traits of negotiation, leadership, and influence. Similarly, Tata’s tenure was marked by a determination to modernise the group, streamline operations, and focus on innovation.
