Winter tightens its grip in the north and rain clouds gather in the south.

A sharp winter chill continues to dominate large parts of India on Friday, January 9, with north India locked in cold wave and dense fog conditions, while southern and coastal regions brace for clouds, haze and spells of rain. From the biting cold in Delhi and Kashmir to mist in Bengaluru and thunderstorms in Chennai, today’s weather presents a stark regional contrast.
Delhi weather today: Cold, foggy and below normal
Cold conditions have tightened their grip across Delhi-NCR as winter nears its peak. The combined effect of an active western disturbance, weak sunshine and stagnant winds has pushed temperatures below normal.
Current temperature Delhi: Minimum between 5°C and 7°C, maximum 16°C to 18°C
Fog alert: Moderate to dense fog likely in all districts, with visibility dropping below 200 metres in some areas
Impact: Morning fog may disrupt road and air traffic
There is no major relief expected over the next few days. Light to moderate fog is likely to persist during mornings, while maximum temperatures are set to remain below normal. Partly cloudy skies may develop between January 10 and 12.
North India: Fog, cold wave and poor visibility
A relentless mix of cold wave and dense fog is affecting the Indo-Gangetic plains on January 9.
Uttar Pradesh: Cities such as Kanpur, Lucknow and Patna are facing severe cold and fog, with visibility dropping sharply in many areas
Rajasthan: Jaipur temperature has touched the lowest levels of the month, with cold wave conditions continuing in isolated pockets
Punjab, Haryana and Delhi: Dense to very dense fog during morning hours
Temperatures across parts of Uttar Pradesh and Madhya Pradesh have plunged 6–10°C below normal, with Gwalior recording its lowest-ever January maximum temperature at 10.4°C.
Kashmir temperature: Freezing nights during Chilla-i-Kalan
An intense cold wave has gripped Jammu and Kashmir, with night temperatures well below freezing.
Coldest spots: Sonamarg (–9.8°C), Gulmarg (–9.2°C), Pahalgam (–8.6°C)
Srinagar temperature: –5.1°C, the coldest night of the season so far
Minimum temperatures may fall further till January 10
Kashmir is expected to remain largely dry in the coming days, with only isolated light rain or snow later in January. The region is currently in Chilla-i-Kalan, the harshest 40-day winter phase.
Bengaluru weather: Misty start to the day
Temperature Bengaluru (formerly Bangalore) remains mild but wintry in the mornings.
Today temperature: 15°C to 26°C
Condition: Misty, with humidity between 50% and 75%
No weather warnings issued
South India: Clouds, haze and rain spells
Chennai: Partly cloudy with one or two spells of rain or thundershowers; thunderstorms with lightning likely. Temperatures between 24°C and 28°C
Thiruvananthapuram: Partly cloudy with rain or thundershowers, 23°C to 34°C
Hyderabad: Partly cloudy with haze, 13°C to 28°C
Amaravati: Hazy conditions, 19°C to 31°C
Mumbai and Maharashtra: Dry for now
Mumbai remains largely dry with partly cloudy skies and light haze today.
Mumbai temperature: 18–21°C minimum, 31–32°C maximum
Light, isolated rainfall is possible only in parts of South Madhya Maharashtra around January 12–13
No weather warnings issued
