Severe cold conditions continued across large parts of northern India on Monday as the India Meteorological Department warned that dense to very dense fog
New Delhi: Cold weather conditions prevailed across most parts of northern India on Monday, although minimum temperatures in several areas remained slightly above seasonal averages. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) said dense to very dense fog is expected to affect large parts of the region until December 27, disrupting visibility during night and morning hours.
In Delhi, brief spells of fog reduced visibility in the morning. The maximum temperature ranged between 16 and 18 degrees Celsius, while the minimum stayed between 8 and 11 degrees Celsius. While minimum temperatures were above normal at some locations, maximum temperatures remained below normal at most places. Palam recorded the lowest visibility at 150 metres around 8 am, which improved gradually as fog turned shallow by mid-morning.

The IMD has forecast near-normal temperatures for Delhi on December 25, Christmas Day, with mainly clear skies and shallow fog during early hours.
Punjab and Haryana continued to experience cold conditions, despite minimum temperatures being higher than usual in several districts. Amritsar recorded a minimum temperature of 9.7 degrees Celsius, while Ludhiana registered 7.2 degrees Celsius. In Haryana, Ambala logged 10 degrees Celsius, Hisar 8.9 degrees, and Karnal 9 degrees Celsius.
In Jammu and Kashmir, recent precipitation led to a rise in night temperatures and a dip in daytime temperatures. The Meteorological Department forecast another spell of snow and rain over the next 12 hours, with moderate snowfall expected in higher reaches and light rain over the plains.
Himachal Pradesh’s weather office issued a yellow warning for dense fog in parts of Bilaspur, Una and the Balh valley in Mandi district during early morning and late night hours until December 26. Light snow and rain are likely at isolated places in the high hills on December 28.
Scattered to fairly widespread light to moderate rainfall and snowfall are forecast over Jammu and Kashmir from December 23 to 27 and again on December 28. Himachal Pradesh and Uttarakhand may also witness isolated rainfall or snowfall on December 22 and December 28.
Parts of Rajasthan experienced scattered to dense fog on Monday morning, with Pali recording 8 degrees Celsius and Sirohi logging the lowest minimum temperature at 8.9 degrees Celsius.
According to the IMD, dense to very dense fog is likely over Punjab until December 27, over Uttar Pradesh until December 23 and again from December 25 to 28, and over Haryana, Chandigarh and Delhi from December 24 to 27. Dense fog is also expected in isolated areas of the western Himalayan region, Bihar, Odisha, Rajasthan, north Chhattisgarh, Jharkhand and north Madhya Pradesh over the coming days.
The weather department has advised commuters to remain cautious as reduced visibility may affect road, rail and air travel across northern and eastern India.
