Cyclone Murasu's remnants to keep southern India wet

Rainfall activity is expected to continue across several southern states as the remnants of Cyclone Murasu influence weather conditions. The system, which crossed the Andhra Pradesh coast before weakening, has further weakened into a depression over east Telangana and adjoining coastal Andhra Pradesh.

According to the IMD, the depression is expected to move nearly northwards and weaken into a well-marked low-pressure area. However, its remaining influence is likely to bring showers to parts of southern India.

Isolated to scattered rainfall is forecast over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal, Kerala, coastal Karnataka, Lakshadweep, Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka on November 5. Coastal Andhra Pradesh and Yanam are also likely to receive rainfall.

Heavy rain and thunderstorms possible in some areas

The IMD has forecast isolated heavy rainfall over Tamil Nadu, Puducherry, Karaikal and south interior Karnataka.

Thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds are also likely over parts of coastal Andhra Pradesh, Rayalaseema and south interior Karnataka.

Residents in these regions should remain alert to changing weather conditions, particularly during periods of heavy rain and thunderstorms.

Central and eastern India may also receive showers

Parts of central and eastern India could experience unsettled weather on Thursday. Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh are likely to receive isolated to scattered rainfall.

Odisha may experience thunderstorms accompanied by lightning and gusty winds.

In contrast, the IMD has not forecast significant weather activity over north-western, western and north-eastern India during the week.

Delhi-NCR to experience clear skies and morning mist

Delhi-NCR is expected to remain largely dry on November 5, with mainly clear skies and the possibility of shallow fog or mist at a few places during the morning.

The maximum temperature is likely to remain between 27°C and 29°C, while the minimum temperature is expected to range from 15°C to 17°C.

North-westerly winds are forecast to blow at speeds of up to 15 kmph during the morning. Wind speeds could increase to around 20 kmph in the afternoon before slowing down in the evening.

With no significant rainfall expected, pollution levels in Delhi and neighbouring areas could remain a concern as Diwali approaches.

How Cyclone Murasu is influencing India's weather

  • Why is southern India still receiving rain after the cyclone weakened?

A cyclone does not stop influencing weather conditions immediately after weakening. Even after losing its severe cyclonic status, the associated low-pressure system can continue to draw moisture and trigger rainfall across neighbouring regions.

In this case, the remnants of Cyclone Murasu are influencing parts of southern India, bringing showers and the possibility of isolated heavy rainfall.

Which regions need to watch the weather?

  • Tamil Nadu and Puducherry: Isolated heavy rainfall is possible.
  • Karnataka: Coastal and south interior regions may receive showers, with isolated heavy rainfall possible in south interior Karnataka.
  • Kerala and Lakshadweep: Isolated to scattered rainfall is forecast.
  • Andhra Pradesh: Coastal areas and Rayalaseema may experience showers and thunderstorms.
  • Vidarbha and Chhattisgarh: Isolated to scattered rainfall is expected.
  • Odisha: Thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds are possible.
  • Delhi-NCR: Mainly clear skies, with morning mist or shallow fog and no significant rainfall expected.

Will Delhi's pollution improve with the weather remaining dry?

The absence of rain means there may be fewer opportunities for natural washing away of airborne dust and pollutants. Weather conditions, including wind speed and direction, also influence how pollutants disperse.

With Diwali approaching, pollution levels remain an important concern for Delhi-NCR. However, the actual air quality will depend on several factors and cannot be determined from the rainfall forecast alone.
