Sankashti Chaturthi is considered one of the most sacred days dedicated to Lord Ganesha, when devotees worship him with deep devotion and gratitude. The day holds immense religious importance in Hindu traditions, as it is entirely devoted to seeking blessings from Ganpati Bappa.
As per the Hindu Panchang, Vikata Sankashti Chaturthi is observed on the Chaturthi tithi of the Krishna Paksha in the month of Chaitra. According to the Gregorian calendar, this year the fast is being observed on April 5, 2026.

Significance
Sankashti Chaturthi is dedicated to Lord Ganesha, who is regarded as the remover of obstacles and the first deity to be worshipped before any auspicious activity.
He is the son of Lord Shiva and Goddess Parvati and is also known as Pratham Pujya.
Observing this fast is believed to help devotees overcome difficulties and bring happiness, prosperity and fulfilment of wishes. The word ‘Vikata’ refers to a formidable form, while ‘Sankashti’ signifies relief from troubles.
The fast is widely observed in Maharashtra with great devotion. It is also believed that childless couples who observe this vrat with sincerity may be blessed with children.
Puja vidhi (rituals):
- Devotees wake up early and begin the day with a holy bath.
- Take a sankalp (vow) to observe the fast.
- Place an idol of Lord Ganesha on a wooden platform.
- Light a diya with ghee and incense sticks.
- Invoke Lord Ganesha by chanting mantras.
- Offer yellow flowers, apply haldi tilak, and present modaks or boondi laddoos.
- Offer durva grass along with bhog such as halwa, kheer and poori.
- Recite the vrat katha and perform aarti like “Jai Ganesh Jai Ganesh Dev” or “Shendur Laal Chadhaavo”.
- Distribute prasad among family members and spend the day in devotion.
- In the evening, offer water to the Moon God and break the fast after moonrise.
