Chennai: Actor-turned-politician Vijay’s Tamilagam Vettri Kazhagam (TVK) has dismissed speculation about joining the AIADMK-led NDA alliance in Tamil Nadu ahead of the Assembly elections. The party stressed that reports of a tie-up were being circulated to divert attention from public issues.

TVK General Secretary CTR Nirmal Kumar took to X (formerly Twitter) to clarify, urging members to follow official announcements only and ignore rumours.

Talks with NDA: Final stage but unresolved

Sources familiar with discussions say negotiations between TVK and the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) have reached the final phase, with most terms broadly settled. The proposed arrangement reportedly included 50–70 Assembly seats for TVK and potential political options:

Freedom to remain outside the Cabinet and assume the principal opposition role even if the alliance forms government

However, a key hurdle remains Vijay’s reluctance to endorse AIADMK leader Edappadi K. Palaniswami as the chief ministerial candidate, slowing the pace of finalisation.

Internal dynamics: Alliance vs solo contest

Within TVK, opinions differ. Some district-level leaders favour joining an alliance, seeing it as a stronger platform, while others lean toward contesting independently to preserve the party’s political identity.

Party insiders acknowledge that Vijay’s decision will be decisive, and uncertainty over a solo contest has already triggered concerns among mid-level leaders about electoral prospects.

Strategic positioning: TVK in Tamil Nadu politics

Formed in February 2024, TVK has reshaped the state’s bipolar, Dravidian-centric political landscape. The party had previously supported Congress demands for greater power in Tamil Nadu, reflecting its growing influence despite its short history.

With 234 Assembly constituencies at stake, TVK’s stance—whether independent or allied—could influence the balance of power in Tamil Nadu’s upcoming elections, expected in April or May 2026.
