Vijay to take oath as Chief Minister today

Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam founder Vijay is scheduled to take oath as Chief Minister at 10 am on Sunday.

The oath of office will be administered by Governor Rajendra Arlekar in the presence of alliance leaders, political figures, party workers and invited guests.

The ceremony is expected to draw major crowds and widespread attention across Tamil Nadu due to Vijay’s popularity and the historic nature of the government formation.

TVK forms historic government

TVK emerged as the single-largest party in the 2026 Tamil Nadu Assembly election with 108 seats.

Although short of the majority mark on its own, Vijay secured support from Congress, CPI, CPI(M), VCK and IUML to cross the required number in the 234-member Assembly.

Support from Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi and Indian Union Muslim League proved crucial in helping TVK form the government.

Political analysts say the result represents one of the biggest changes in Tamil Nadu’s political landscape since the rise of Dravidian parties in the 1960s.

Majority test before May 13

Governor Arlekar has asked Vijay to prove his majority on the floor of the Assembly on or before May 13.

Vijay, who won from both Perambur and Tiruchirappalli East constituencies, is expected to resign from one seat as required under election rules.

Once completed, the TVK-led coalition government will begin its first full term in office amid high public expectations and intense political scrutiny.
