Chennai: A congratulatory message from Edappadi K. Palaniswami has intensified speculation over possible political realignments in Tamil Nadu, as the battle to form the next government enters a dramatic final phase.

The All India Anna Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam general secretary sparked fresh debate after posting a carefully worded statement on X following the recently concluded Assembly election.

“In the recently concluded 17th Tamil Nadu Legislative Assembly election, candidates from various political parties contested and emerged victorious. I extend my heartfelt congratulations to the party forming the government in Tamil Nadu,” Palaniswami wrote.

The remark has drawn widespread attention as it comes amid intense negotiations involving actor-turned-politician Vijay and his party, the Tamilaga Vettri Kazhagam, which emerged as the single-largest force in the election by securing 107 seats.

Despite its strong performance, TVK remains short of the 118 seats required for a majority in the 234-member Assembly. Support from the Indian National Congress boosted the party’s numbers, while the Communist Party of India and Communist Party of India (Marxist) also extended backing in an effort to prevent what Left leaders described as a “proxy BJP regime”.

Attention has now shifted to the Viduthalai Chiruthaigal Katchi, whose support could prove decisive in helping Vijay cross the majority mark. The party has indicated that it will announce its position by 4pm, further heightening political suspense across the state.

Observers believe Palaniswami’s reference to the “party forming the government” may signal that the AIADMK expects Vijay to secure enough support to stake claim to power.

The political drama deepened after an AIADMK MP reportedly claimed that “my leader will become CM”, fuelling speculation over possible behind-the-scenes discussions and shifting alliances.

Meanwhile, anti-DMK parties appear increasingly focused on avoiding a prolonged deadlock that could potentially lead to President’s Rule in the state.
