The 16-coach trainset, developed by Bharat Earth Movers Limited (BEML) using technology from Chennai's Integral Coach Factory (ICF), is currently undergoing technical validation. Railway officials have clarified that the train has not yet been handed over to Indian Railways and remains under BEML's control for testing.
According to South Western Railway Chief Public Relations Officer Dr Manjunath Kanamadi, the train has been stationed at SMVT Bengaluru solely for operational checks and evaluation before it receives the required regulatory approvals.
Bengaluru–Mumbai route to get premium overnight service
Once launched, the Vande Bharat Sleeper will connect KSR Bengaluru with Mumbai's Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj Terminus (CSMT), offering a faster overnight travel option for passengers travelling via Hubballi-Dharwad, Belagavi and Pune.
The service is expected to strengthen connectivity between Karnataka and Maharashtra while providing a premium alternative to conventional overnight trains.
The first Vande Bharat Sleeper service, introduced in January 2026 between Howrah and Kamakhya, demonstrated the potential of faster overnight rail travel by significantly reducing journey times.
Train designed for speed and comfort
The Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper consists of 16 coaches with a total capacity of approximately 823 passengers. The configuration includes:
- 11 AC three-tier sleeper coaches
- Four AC two-tier sleeper coaches
- One First AC coach
The train has been designed for a top speed of 180 kmph, although operational speeds will depend on route infrastructure and regulatory approvals.
Passengers can expect ergonomically designed berths with improved cushioning, automatic plug doors connected by vestibules, upgraded suspension for smoother rides, reduced cabin noise and modern interiors aimed at improving overnight comfort.
Advanced safety features
The train is equipped with several advanced safety and passenger convenience systems, including:
- Kavach automatic train protection system
- Emergency talk-back communication system
- Advanced driver control interface
- Improved hygiene through disinfectant technology
- Aerodynamic exterior for better efficiency
These features are intended to enhance both operational safety and the overall passenger experience.
Launch after successful trials
Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw had earlier indicated that the Bengaluru–Mumbai Vande Bharat Sleeper service would begin soon. However, officials have stressed that commercial operations will commence only after all performance trials are completed and the necessary approvals are granted.
The Bengaluru–Mumbai service is expected to become India's second Vande Bharat Sleeper route, further expanding the country's network of premium semi-high-speed overnight trains.
