After the successful launch of the Howrah-Kamakhya Vande Bharat Sleeper, Indian Railways is reportedly considering several new overnight premium train routes, including Mumbai-Bengaluru, New Delhi-Mumbai, Chennai, Secunderabad and Srinagar. Here's a look at the corridors that could be next in the Vande Bharat Sleeper expansion plan.

Vande Bharat Sleeper trains could soon expand beyond their first operational route, with several major city pairs emerging as frontrunners for deployment. From Mumbai-Bengaluru and New Delhi-Mumbai to Chennai and Srinagar, Indian Railways is reportedly evaluating a series of long-distance corridors for its next-generation overnight premium trains.
After the launch of India's first Vande Bharat Sleeper service between Howrah and Kamakhya in 2026, attention has shifted to where the country's fastest overnight trains could run next. Designed to combine high-speed travel with modern sleeping accommodation, the sleeper variant is expected to play a key role in reshaping long-distance rail journeys across India.
A report by News18 highlighted that multiple high-demand routes are being considered as Indian Railways prepares for a broader rollout of Vande Bharat Sleeper services in the coming years.
Mumbai-Bengaluru among strongest contenders
One of the most significant developments concerns the proposed Mumbai-Bengaluru Vande Bharat Sleeper service. According to reports, Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw has approved the proposal for the route, making it one of the strongest candidates to become the next operational sleeper corridor after Howrah-Kamakhya.
The route links two of India's largest economic centres and is expected to substantially cut overnight travel time once introduced.
Delhi-centric expansion takes shape
Several of the routes under discussion originate from the national capital, reflecting the importance of Delhi as a major long-distance rail hub.
According to a report on the planned sleeper expansion, the following corridors have repeatedly surfaced in discussions:
New Delhi-Mumbai
New Delhi-Ahmedabad
New Delhi-Howrah
New Delhi-Chennai
New Delhi-Secunderabad
New Delhi-Pune
New Delhi-Srinagar
While Indian Railways has not formally announced launch dates for these routes, reports suggest they remain under consideration as additional sleeper trainsets become available.
The Delhi-Mumbai corridor, in particular, is viewed as a natural fit due to the enormous passenger traffic between India's political and financial capitals. Similarly, Delhi-Howrah and Delhi-Chennai rank among the country's busiest long-distance rail sectors, making them attractive candidates for premium overnight services.
Ahmedabad route also features in expansion discussions
Mumbai-Ahmedabad is among the routes linked to future Vande Bharat Sleeper deployment. Although the corridor already enjoys strong rail connectivity and is central to India's upcoming high-speed rail project, it continues to feature in discussions surrounding premium overnight travel options.
Kashmir connection generates interest
Another route drawing attention is New Delhi-Srinagar. Following the completion of railway connectivity to Kashmir, reports indicated that premium services, including Vande Bharat Sleeper trains, are being explored for the corridor. However, no official confirmation has yet been issued regarding its launch.
What makes Vande Bharat Sleeper trains different?
Unlike conventional overnight trains, the Vande Bharat Sleeper has been designed to offer a more modern travel experience while maintaining faster journey times.
Key features expected on the trains include:
- Maximum speed of up to 160 kmph
- Aircraft-inspired interiors
- Enhanced sleeping berths and cabins
- Smart ambient lighting systems
- High-speed onboard Wi-Fi
- CCTV surveillance across coaches
- Indigenous Kavach safety technology
The concept is aimed at allowing passengers to board in the evening, travel overnight, and arrive at their destination the following morning with significantly reduced journey times.
