A five-member team from the Archaeological Survey of India (ASI), led by Prof. Alok Tripathi, Additional Director-General (Archaeology), has commenced an underwater exploration off the coast of Dwarka. The team includes H.K. Nayak, Director (Excavations and Explorations), Dr. Aparajita Sharma, Assistant Superintending Archaeologist, Ms. Poonam Vind, and Rajkumari Barbina. The investigation has begun near the Gomati Creek, focusing on submerged remains.
What is unique about this exploration?
This marks the first time in ASI’s history that a team with a large number of women archaeologists is actively involved in underwater investigations. Additionally, it is one of the largest groups of archaeologists to undertake such an exploration.
Why is the investigation important?
The exploration is part of the recently revived Underwater Archaeology Wing (UAW) of ASI, which has been conducting offshore research since the 1980s. Since 2001, the wing has undertaken investigations at sites such as Bangaram Island (Lakshadweep), Mahabalipuram (Tamil Nadu), Loktak Lake (Manipur), Elephanta Island (Maharashtra), and previous excavations at Dwarka. The team has also collaborated with the Indian Navy and other government agencies to protect India’s underwater cultural heritage.
What were the past findings at Dwarka?
Between 2005 and 2007, the ASI carried out offshore and onshore excavations at Dwarka. Investigations during low tide led to the discovery of sculptures and stone anchors, prompting further underwater excavations. The current exploration aims to build upon these findings and uncover more historical remains in the seabed between Dwarka and Bet Dwarka.
What is the broader objective?
The ASI’s latest efforts are a crucial step in preserving and documenting India’s underwater cultural heritage. By continuing its exploration, the ASI seeks to uncover valuable insights into the region’s history and maritime legacy.
