The Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has extended the free online Aadhaar document update facility till June 14, 2027, allowing Aadhaar holders to update important identity and address documents without paying any fee through the myAadhaar portal.

The decision was announced through an office memorandum issued on May 13, 2026, after UIDAI observed that a large number of users had already used the online document update service in recent months.

The extension comes after UIDAI observed that a large number of users had already used the online document update service in recent months. Officials say the move is part of a wider effort to improve the accuracy of Aadhaar records and strengthen India’s digital identity infrastructure.

What Aadhaar users can update for free

The free service applies only to online updates related to:

  • Proof of Identity (PoI)
  • Proof of Address (PoA)

Users can upload fresh supporting documents through the myAadhaar portal free of cost till June 14, 2027.

However, UIDAI clarified that the waiver applies only to updates completed online. Aadhaar holders visiting physical Aadhaar enrolment or update centres will still have to pay Rs 75 for the same service.

UIDAI said the online process is designed to be simple and fully digital. Users need to log into the myAadhaar portal using their Aadhaar number and verify their identity through a one-time password sent to their registered mobile number. After authentication, users can upload scanned copies of valid identity and address proof documents and submit the request online.

How the online Aadhaar update process works

UIDAI said the update process has been designed to remain simple and fully digital.

Users need to:

  • Visit the myAadhaar portal
  • Log in using their Aadhaar number
  • Verify identity through OTP authentication
  • Upload valid identity and address proof documents
  • Submit the request online

After successful submission, a 14-digit Update Request Number (URN) is generated, which can be used to track the application status later.

UIDAI has advised users to keep the URN safely until the update process is completed.

Why updating Aadhaar has become important

The authority has repeatedly urged Aadhaar holders to keep their records updated, especially if there has been a change in address, mobile number or supporting documents over time.

Updated Aadhaar details are often required for:

  • PAN-Aadhaar linking
  • KYC verification
  • Bank account opening
  • SIM card verification
  • Government subsidy benefits
  • Insurance and investment services

Incorrect or outdated records can sometimes lead to delays in accessing these services.

New Aadhaar app to replace mAadhaar

Alongside the extension announcement, UIDAI also shared details about a new Aadhaar mobile application that will gradually replace the existing mAadhaar app.

According to the authority, the upcoming app will include:

  • QR code-based Aadhaar sharing
  • Improved privacy controls
  • Easier access to Aadhaar services
  • Simpler digital identity management

UIDAI said the application is being developed to make Aadhaar-related services more secure and user-friendly. However, no official rollout date has been announced yet.

Other Aadhaar update charges explained

UIDAI also clarified the charges for different Aadhaar-related update services.

  • Online PoI and PoA updates: Free till June 14, 2027
  • Same updates at physical centres: Rs 75
  • Biometric updates in some cases: Rs 125
  • Mandatory child biometric updates: Free

Biometric updates include fingerprints, iris scans and photographs.

Part of a wider digital identity push

The extension of the free Aadhaar update service and the upcoming launch of a new Aadhaar app suggest that UIDAI is preparing for a broader digital identity modernisation drive across India.

Officials believe updated Aadhaar records will help improve authentication systems, reduce data mismatches and strengthen the delivery of digital services linked to Aadhaar.

The authority also clarified that biometric updates, including fingerprints, iris scans and photographs, remain free for children during mandatory age-based updates. In other situations, biometric updates may cost Rs 125. Demographic changes such as name, gender, date of birth, address, mobile number or email updates remain free only when they are carried out together with biometric updates. Otherwise, the standard Rs 75 charge applies.

The extension of the free online update facility is being seen as part of a larger push by UIDAI to improve the accuracy of Aadhaar records and strengthen India’s digital identity infrastructure ahead of the rollout of newer Aadhaar-based services and applications.
