Indian Railways is preparing to launch its biggest ticket booking system upgrade in nearly four decades, aiming to transform online reservations, reduce Tatkal booking issues and improve passenger experience through AI-driven technology.

Indian Railways is set to roll out its largest-ever Passenger Reservation System (PRS) modernisation project since the platform was first introduced in 1986.
The massive digital upgrade, reportedly worth around ₹1,000 crore, will begin transitioning trains to the new reservation infrastructure from August 2026. Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw recently reviewed the migration process and instructed officials to ensure passengers do not face disruption during the transition from the existing system to the upgraded platform.

Why the current booking system is being replaced
The existing reservation infrastructure has faced increasing pressure over the years due to rising passenger demand and growing dependence on online ticket booking.
Problems have become especially common during:
- Tatkal bookings
- Festival travel rush
- Holiday seasons
- High simultaneous user activity
Officials say the older system was not designed to handle today’s massive digital traffic volumes. Currently, nearly 88 to 89 per cent of railway ticket bookings are made online every day across India.
Passengers frequently experience server crashes, payment failures, app slowdowns and instant ticket sell-outs during peak booking periods.
Booking speed expected to rise sharply
One of the biggest highlights of the new reservation platform is a dramatic increase in booking and enquiry handling capacity.
According to reports, the upgraded system could support:
- Around 1.25 lakh ticket bookings per minute
- Up to 40 lakh enquiries per minute
The new infrastructure is expected to significantly improve website speed, app responsiveness and payment processing during heavy traffic periods.
Railway officials believe the overhaul could reduce server overload issues that have frustrated passengers for years, especially during Tatkal bookings.
AI-powered waitlist prediction becoming more accurate
Indian Railways is also increasingly integrating artificial intelligence into passenger services through the RailOne app.
The app reportedly predicts waitlist confirmation chances with up to 94 per cent accuracy using AI-driven analytics and historical travel data.
RailOne has already crossed more than 3.5 crore downloads and handles millions of ticket-related transactions daily.
The platform currently combines multiple railway services into one ecosystem including:
- Reserved ticket booking
- Unreserved ticket booking
- Train information
- Platform tickets
- Complaint management
- Passenger support services
- Tatkal booking system may become smoother
Tatkal booking has long remained one of the most stressful experiences for railway passengers due to extreme competition and rapid ticket sell-outs within seconds.
The upgraded reservation infrastructure is expected to:
- Reduce server crashes
- Improve booking speed
- Limit bot abuse
- Control ticket touting
- Improve fairness during high-demand bookings
Railways has already begun deploying OTP-based verification systems and Aadhaar-linked authentication measures to reduce fraudulent and bulk bookings.
Reports also suggest verified-user systems may become mandatory for some Tatkal bookings in the future.
New passenger-focused features expected
The upgraded reservation platform is expected to introduce several new improvements including:
- Faster booking confirmation
- Better mobile integration
- Multilingual support
- AI-driven analytics
- Enhanced anti-fraud protection
- Improved payment systems
Indian Railways is also reportedly working on earlier chart preparation systems and expanded waiting-list management to reduce uncertainty for passengers.
RailOne expected to become central railway platform
The RailOne app is gradually becoming the centre of Indian Railways’ broader digital ecosystem.
Older ticketing systems and services are expected to be integrated into RailOne as part of the larger modernisation effort.
Officials say the broader goal is to create a single, streamlined railway platform capable of handling reservations, passenger services, AI-driven assistance and real-time operational management under one digital infrastructure.
One of India’s biggest public digital infrastructure projects
The reservation system overhaul is being viewed as one of the most significant public technology upgrades in India’s transport sector.
Apart from ticketing reforms, Indian Railways is simultaneously working on:
- AI integration
- Smart monitoring systems
- Freight digitisation
- Cybersecurity upgrades
- Passenger experience improvements
Infrastructure modernisation
With millions of passengers relying on railway services daily, the success of the upgraded PRS system could significantly reshape how train travel bookings work in India over the coming years.
