The Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) has launched its revamped ticket booking website on July 15, introducing a faster and more user-friendly platform designed to improve the online reservation experience.

The upgrade comes after Railway Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw announced plans for the overhaul following repeated complaints from passengers, particularly students, about difficulties in booking train tickets on the existing portal.

The redesigned platform is intended to reduce delays, improve booking success rates during peak demand and simplify navigation for millions of daily users.

Faster bookings and higher capacity

One of the biggest changes is the website's significantly enhanced booking capacity.

The new platform can process over 1.5 lakh ticket bookings every minute, compared with roughly 32,000 bookings per minute on the previous system.

The Passenger Reservation System (PRS) has also been upgraded to handle more than 40 lakh enquiries per minute, a tenfold increase from the earlier capacity of around four lakh.

The improvements are expected to reduce crashes, failed transactions and payment issues during high-demand booking periods, especially during Tatkal hours.

New features for passengers

The upgraded website introduces several new features designed to make ticket booking easier:

  • Seat preference option

Passengers can now select their preferred seat type while booking instead of relying entirely on automatic allocation.

  • Fare calendar

A new fare calendar allows users to compare ticket prices across multiple travel dates before confirming a reservation, helping travellers choose more economical options.

  • Unified seat availability

Instead of checking each class separately, passengers can now view seat availability across Sleeper, AC 3 Tier, AC 2 Tier and other classes on a single screen.

This reduces the time spent switching between booking categories.

  • Cleaner interface with fewer interruptions

The redesigned website also aims to provide a smoother booking experience by reducing:

  • Repeated CAPTCHA verifications
  • Pop-up windows
  • Flashing promotional banners
  • Unnecessary interruptions during the booking process

The streamlined interface is expected to improve booking speed, particularly during the competitive Tatkal booking window.

  • Multi-language support and integrated services

The new portal supports multiple Indian languages, making it more accessible to passengers across the country.

It also integrates concession booking services for:

  • Divyangjan passengers
  • Students
  • Patients

Previously, these services often required separate booking processes.

  • Part of wider railway reforms

The website launch forms part of a broader reform programme announced by the Ministry of Railways.

Alongside the passenger-facing improvements, Indian Railways has introduced several structural reforms, including:

  • Simplified contractor regulations
  • New freight transport policies
  • Skill certification requirements for railway workers

According to the ministry, these reforms aim to modernise railway infrastructure and improve efficiency across passenger and freight operations.
