Indian Railways is set to launch the beta version of its revamped IRCTC website, bringing a faster, cleaner and more reliable ticket-booking experience with improved Tatkal performance, higher booking capacity and several passenger-friendly features.

The Ministry of Railways is preparing to launch the beta version of the redesigned IRCTC website, with the upgraded portal expected to be available to the public by 15 July 2026.
The overhaul is aimed at making online train ticket booking faster, simpler and more reliable, particularly during high-demand Tatkal booking hours.

The new website is being developed jointly by the Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation (IRCTC) and the Centre for Railway Information Systems (CRIS) as part of a broader modernisation of Indian Railways' digital ticketing infrastructure.
The launch follows extensive testing and user feedback, including a review of the beta version by students at Malaviya National Institute of Technology (MNIT), Jaipur, who helped identify technical issues and suggest improvements before the public rollout.
Why the website is being upgraded
The existing IRCTC website has long faced criticism from passengers, especially during Tatkal booking windows, when millions of users attempt to book tickets simultaneously.
Common complaints include:
- Website crashes during peak booking hours
- Slow page loading
- Long waiting times
- Multiple CAPTCHA verifications
- Confusing navigation
- Frequent session timeouts
- Difficulty checking seat availability across different classes
To address these issues, Indian Railways has redesigned both the website and the underlying reservation technology.
Twelve major features coming to the new IRCTC website
1. Massive increase in ticket booking capacity
The upgraded platform will reportedly be capable of processing more than 1.5 lakh ticket bookings per minute, a significant increase from the current capacity of around 32,000 bookings per minute.
This is expected to improve performance during Tatkal bookings and other peak travel periods.
2. Much faster PNR and train enquiries
The enquiry system is also receiving a major boost.
The upgraded platform will reportedly handle over 40 lakh PNR status and train enquiries per minute, compared with around 4 lakh enquiries per minute currently.
3. Faster loading during Tatkal bookings
One of the biggest improvements is expected to be smoother website performance during Tatkal ticket sales.
Passengers should experience:
- Faster page loading
- Reduced waiting times
- Better server response
- Fewer crashes during heavy traffic
4. Cleaner, clutter-free interface
The redesigned website removes unnecessary visual distractions.
Passengers will no longer see:
- Flashing graphics
- Intrusive advertisements
- Excessive pop-ups
The simplified interface is intended to help users complete bookings more quickly.
5. No unnecessary CAPTCHAs
One of the most requested improvements has been the removal of repeated CAPTCHA verification.
The new booking process is expected to eliminate unnecessary CAPTCHAs that often slow passengers during Tatkal bookings.
6. Seat availability for every class on one screen
Currently, passengers often need to switch between Sleeper, AC and other classes to check seat availability.
The new portal will display seat availability across multiple classes simultaneously, making it easier to compare options before booking.
7. Preferred seat and berth selection
Passengers will have the option to choose their preferred berth or seat during booking, subject to availability.
8. Fare Calendar
A new Fare Calendar will allow passengers to compare ticket fares across different travel dates before making a reservation.
This feature is expected to help travellers find cheaper travel options more easily.
9. Passenger details saved for quicker bookings
Frequently used passenger information, including names, ages and other details, can be stored securely.
This means users will not need to repeatedly enter the same information for every booking, significantly reducing booking time.
10. Multilingual support
The upgraded portal will include multilingual support, making ticket booking and enquiries easier for users across different regions of India.
11. Better support for special passenger categories
Facilities for Divyangjan (persons with disabilities), students and patients will be integrated into a single platform, simplifying access to concession-related services.
12. Available on the RailOne app
Most of the upgraded booking features will also be introduced on the RailOne mobile application, ensuring a consistent experience across web and mobile platforms.
A new reservation system behind the scenes
The website upgrade is only one part of a much larger digital transformation.
Indian Railways is also replacing its nearly 40-year-old Passenger Reservation System (PRS) with a modern, scalable reservation engine.
The new PRS is designed to manage far higher traffic volumes while improving reliability and reducing downtime.
According to the Railways, the upgraded system will be capable of handling 10 times more traffic than the existing infrastructure.
The modernisation follows the rapid growth of online ticketing, with nearly 88% of railway ticket bookings now taking place through digital platforms.
What this means for passengers
If the beta rollout proceeds as planned, passengers can expect a noticeably smoother booking experience from mid-July.
The combination of higher booking capacity, fewer booking steps, improved Tatkal performance, faster enquiries, reduced server congestion and a simplified interface is expected to make train reservations significantly easier, especially during periods of peak demand.
The upgraded portal also lays the foundation for the complete rollout of Indian Railways' next-generation Passenger Reservation System in the coming months.
