Chart prepared, Tatkal gone? This little-known IRCTC option could still find you a seat

Tatkal tickets sold out? The reservation chart is already prepared? It may seem like your chances of getting a confirmed train ticket are over.

Not necessarily.

Indian Railways has a lesser-known facility called Current Booking, which allows passengers to book vacant accommodation even after the reservation chart has been prepared, subject to the applicable booking time limits. The option is available through IRCTC’s Charts Vacant facility and also in RailOne App.

That means a passenger who misses out on Tatkal can still check whether a confirmed seat has opened up on the same train.

The trick is to check after chart preparation

The reservation chart tells the railway which seats and berths have been allotted. But it does not always mean every available berth is occupied.

Some accommodation can remain vacant. Current Booking allows such vacant accommodation to be offered for booking after charting.

This is where the Charts Vacant option becomes useful.

Instead of assuming that a prepared chart means “no ticket available”, passengers can check the train again on IRCTC. If vacant accommodation is listed for Current Booking, it can be booked online.

The biggest advantage: it is a confirmed ticket

There is an important difference between Current Booking and joining a waitlist.

IRCTC states that only confirmed tickets are booked under Current Booking. There is no RAC or waitlisted accommodation through this facility.

So, if a vacant berth is available and successfully booked, the passenger gets a confirmed e-ticket.

For someone who has already lost a Tatkal race, that can be a significant second chance.

No need to pay Tatkal charges

Current Booking is also not the same as booking a Tatkal ticket.

The facility is intended for vacant accommodation after charting and does not involve the separate Tatkal quota. Passengers therefore do not pay a Tatkal surcharge merely because they are booking at the last minute.

The applicable fare can vary depending on the train, class and railway rules.

How to check vacant seats on IRCTC

Passengers can look for vacant accommodation using IRCTC’s Charts Vacant facility.

The process is straightforward:

• Open the IRCTC website or app.
• Go to the Charts Vacant option under the train-related services.
• Enter the required train’s number and journey dete.
• Check the coaches and vacant accommodation displayed.
• If a suitable option is available, proceed with the online booking.

Important note: The system will show only accommodation that is actually available for Current Booking at that time.
To check Current Booking availability on the RailOne app:

• Open the RailOne app and select Search Train.
• Search for the train you want to travel on, or enter your departure and destination stations.
• Select the required train from the results.
• Check the Current Availability section shown below the train details.
• If vacant seats are available, the number of seats available for Current Booking will be displayed. 
• Proceed with the online booking.

One detail passengers should not overlook

There is no universal rule that every train will keep Current Booking open until a fixed number of minutes before departure.

IRCTC says Current Booking is permitted after charting and within the existing booking time limit specified by the Railways. Therefore, passengers should check the availability as soon as they know they need the ticket rather than relying on a specific “last five minutes” rule.

What if a passenger gets down at an earlier station?

Vacant accommodation can also become relevant when passengers complete their journeys at intermediate stations.

A berth that is no longer required for the remaining portion of a journey may potentially become available for another passenger, subject to railway rules and the availability shown in the system.

This is one reason why checking Charts Vacant can sometimes reveal options that were not available when the passenger initially searched for a ticket.

A second chance after Tatkal

For last-minute travellers, Current Booking offers something many passengers may not realise they have: another opportunity to look for a confirmed seat even after the reservation chart has been prepared.

So the next time Tatkal shows “no availability”, don't necessarily close IRCTC and give up. Check the chart. There could still be a seat waiting for you.
