New Delhi: Schools will remain closed on Wednesday (July 29) in Nagpur district of Maharashtra and 221 educational institutions in Andhra Pradesh's Visakhapatnam district, where local administrations have announced holidays due to heavy rain and a major religious event, respectively.
Apart from these confirmed closures, some schools in other states may also observe a holiday on account of Guru Purnima, depending on state government notifications and individual school calendars.
Nagpur schools shut after IMD Red Alert
The Nagpur district administration has declared a holiday for all government and private anganwadis, schools, colleges and coaching institutes after the India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a Red Alert for extremely heavy rainfall.
District Collector and Chairman of the District Disaster Management Authority Kumar Ashirwad said the IMD has forecast very heavy to extremely heavy rainfall between July 28 and July 30. Nagpur received more than 108 mm of rain within a few hours, leading to waterlogging in several parts of the city.
The administration said the decision was taken as a precautionary measure to ensure student safety and avoid disruptions caused by flooding and heavy rain. T
he holiday applies across Nagpur city and the district, including areas under the Nagpur Municipal Corporation, Nagpur Rural, Hingna and Kamptee.
Visakhapatnam declares holiday for 221 schools and colleges
According to reports, Visakhapatnam district administration has announced a holiday for 221 schools and colleges on July 29 in view of the annual Simhachalam Giripradakshina.
The closure is limited to educational institutions located along the 32-kilometre Giripradakshina route, where thousands of devotees are expected to participate in the annual pilgrimage.
Authorities said the measure is intended to ensure smooth traffic movement, public safety and the uninterrupted conduct of the religious procession.
Will schools remain closed for Guru Purnima?
Guru Purnima is being observed on July 29 this year. While some schools may declare a holiday in observance of the festival, there is no nationwide school holiday.
Holiday decisions will depend on state government notifications, district administrations and individual school calendars.
Students and parents are advised to check official announcements issued by their respective schools for the latest updates.
