A SpiceJet passenger on a Goa–Pune flight alleged he found a metal object inside a sealed soft drink can, triggering mid-air concern and social media debate on in-flight safety

A SpiceJet passenger on flight SG 1080 from Goa to Pune on Monday alleged that he discovered a metal object inside a sealed soft drink can served during the journey. The claim caused mid-air concern and later sparked discussion on social media about in-flight safety.
According to posts online, the passenger had consumed the drink and soon complained of discomfort. After landing in Pune, he was taken to a hospital for medical checks. The incident quickly drew public attention, with many questioning whether enough precautions were followed during in-flight service.
In a detailed statement, SpiceJet clarified that all beverages served onboard are handed to passengers in sealed condition, and it is the passengers who open them. The airline said the passenger had ordered a sealed soft drink can along with a packet of fox nuts, both of which were served as per standard practice.
After consuming the drink, the passenger reported discomfort and claimed there was a metal object inside the can. The cabin crew immediately assisted him, checked if a doctor was available onboard (none was present), and kept both the captain and the ground team informed. An ambulance was arranged in advance.
On arrival in Pune, the passenger was examined by the airport’s medical team and later referred to a hospital.
At the hospital, X-rays of the throat, chest, and abdomen revealed no foreign object. Doctors suggested an endoscopy for further confirmation, but the passenger chose not to undergo the procedure. He was discharged the same evening.
SpiceJet said it covered all medical expenses and ensured that its staff remained with the passenger during the treatment. The airline also confirmed that the soft drink can was secured for investigation by the vendor, and the passenger was given a chance to document evidence before it was sealed.
The airline added that passenger safety remains its top priority and that it is following due procedures to investigate the complaint further.
