A religious conversion case in Uttar Pradesh's Shamli district has sparked controversy after a man claimed he had embraced Islam of his own free will, while police launched a Special Investigation Team (SIT) probe into allegations of illegal conversion.

Muzaffarnagar (UP): The religious conversion controversy in Shamli intensified after Ayush Malik, who now identifies as Mohammad Ali, publicly stated that he had converted to Islam voluntarily and had no intention of returning to Hinduism.
Speaking to reporters, he said he was a Muslim and claimed that he had embraced the faith several years ago without any coercion. He also alleged that the complaint against him was filed by his father under external pressure.

Complaint alleges illegal conversion
The case stems from a complaint filed by medicine trader Devraj Malik, who alleged that his son was converted to Islam under the pretext of marriage to a woman named Chandni Qureshi.
According to the complaint, Ayush was allegedly taken to Delhi where marriage-related formalities were carried out using forged documents. The complainant also alleged that the conversion was part of a larger conspiracy involving multiple individuals.
Police arrest two, book nine accused
Shamli police have arrested Chandni Qureshi and her father, Islam Qureshi, in connection with the case. Authorities have registered a case against nine individuals, including a cleric.
The accused have been booked under various provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), including sections related to cheating, forgery, extortion and criminal intimidation. Charges have also been invoked under the Uttar Pradesh Prohibition of Unlawful Conversion of Religion Act.

Authorities have increased security across sensitive locations in Shamli following the controversy. Additional police personnel have been deployed, particularly in the Hanuman Road area where Ayush is currently residing.
Officials said two police personnel have also been stationed at his shop as a precautionary measure to maintain law and order.
