'People will see me in her, and next century will be hers,' Indira Gandhi predicted about Priyanka

Two days before her tragic assassination in 1984, Indira Gandhi shared a vision about her granddaughter with her long-time political secretary M L Fotedar: "Fotedarji, I may not live for long, but you will see Priyanka grow." Fotedar asked her, "Do you really think I will live long enough to see that?" Indira replied confidently, "You will live to see her grow and shine on the national stage. People will see me in her, and when they see her, they will remember me. She will shine, and the next century will be hers. People will forget me."

This prophecy of Indira came true 40 years later when Priyanka first contested an election and won. As people see Priyanka today, they often think of Indira—her height, hairstyle, nose, even the sound of her voice seems eerily similar. When Priyanka first arrived in Wayanad, the hoardings didn’t just say "Priyanka is coming”. They said, "Indira is returning”. The media also dubbed her as Indira’s second coming.

Indira's dream

Indira Gandhi shared her hopes for Priyanka’s future just before her assassination. Fotedar recorded this in his book Chinar Leaves-A Political Memoir. A prediction made by a grandmother, which, 40 years later, seemed to unfold as Priyanka began to step into the political arena. Indira believed that Priyanka would one day lead the country and carry forward her legacy. And in 2024, as Priyanka enters politics fully, the nation watches eagerly, wondering if her destiny will indeed be as great as her grandmother’s vision.

A young girl and a prophecy of leadership

At the tender age of 12, a fortune teller visited Rajiv Gandhi's home and predicted that Priyanka would one day become the Prime Minister of India. Rajiv Gandhi, hearing this, scolded his daughter, warning her to disregard such things. But now, as Priyanka takes her first step into active politics, that prophecy lingers. Her political career was expected early due to her prominent family, but she remained distant from electoral politics until 52.

Priyanka was born on January 12, 1972. She studied at Modern School in Delhi and then at Jesus and Mary College in Delhi University, where she graduated in Psychology. She later completed a master’s in Buddhism. In her youth, Priyanka was more interested in staying home and managing the family. It wasn’t until 1991, when her mother Sonia entered politics, that Priyanka was first involved in campaigning.

Two strong women—her grandmother Indira Gandhi, and her mother Sonia Gandhi—raised Priyanka. These two powerful women instilled in Priyanka a sense of strength and purpose, one that would guide her through life’s challenges.

The visit to Nalini's prison

In March 2008, Priyanka visited Nalini, the woman convicted in the assassination of Rajiv Gandhi. Nalini later spoke about that meeting in her memoirs. Priyanka had asked her why she had killed her father, a man who was peaceful and calm, and whether differences could not have been resolved through dialogue. Nalini recalled how Priyanka wept bitterly during the meeting, a moment of deep sorrow for a daughter confronting the painful reality of her father's death.

An unwavering strength
 

There is a vision of Priyanka standing strong, unshaken by the loss of her family. Unlike her brother Rahul, who is often seen as emotional, Priyanka’s strength lies in her silence, her ability to endure and grow from the wounds of the past. The tragic deaths of her grandmother and father shaped Priyanka, turning her into the woman she is today—strong, composed and resilient.

Her role in Congress family

When Priyanka entered politics, she did so with the weight of family history on her shoulders. After a series of electoral losses, especially in Uttar Pradesh, Priyanka took the reins of the Congress party's efforts in the region. In 2019, despite the party’s defeats, Priyanka worked tirelessly, focusing on building the party’s presence in Uttar Pradesh.

Priyanka’s elegant and strong style 

Priyanka’s style is simple yet elegant—her graceful sarees, signature smile and a personality that easily connects with people. She has the power to blend in with any crowd, radiating warmth and charm. She does not rely on flamboyance, but communicates with a calm confidence. In political speeches, she isn’t as vocal as Rahul, but she speaks carefully, with a strength born from reflection.

Priyanka Gandhi first met Robert Vadra during her school days at the age of 13. Robert's sister Michelle Vadra, was Priyanka’s classmate. What started as an acquaintance with her friend’s brother soon blossomed into a friendship. After the tragic death of her father Rajiv Gandhi, Robert became a pillar of support for Priyanka. Shielded from the watchful eyes of security personnel and the media, their friendship eventually turned into love.

During one visit to Sonia Gandhi’s residence along with Michelle, Robert expressed his feelings to Priyanka. With the approval of her mother Sonia Gandhi and brother Rahul, their relationship culminated in marriage on February 10, 1997, at the family home at 10 Janpath. The couple was later blessed with two children, Rehan and Miraya. Priyanka chose to focus on her family, stepping back into the public eye only during election campaigns for her mother and brother.

When Robert Vadra faced an Enforcement Directorate (ED) investigation over alleged illegal property acquisitions, Priyanka stood firmly by her husband. She categorically dismissed the case as BJP's political vendetta. During questioning by the ED, Priyanka even accompanied Robert to the ED office, signaling her unwavering support. Speculation suggests that the ED case may have delayed Priyanka’s active entry into politics. Eventually, as the case and controversies subsided, she began engaging actively in public life.

Priyanka’s political journey is just beginning. As she takes on greater responsibilities, the challenges she faces, from natural disasters to the issue of backwardness in development, will shape her further. But India’s hope rests on her ability to carry forward the legacy of her family and bring the Congress Party to the forefront. She is seen as a potential leader, and her rise will be closely watched by both the country and the world.

The nation has rarely seen Priyanka Gandhi raise her voice in anger, but one notable instance was directed at Prime Minister Narendra Modi. When Modi described Priyanka as being like a daughter to him, her sharp response to the media was, "My father Rajiv Gandhi was a martyr for this nation. I won't accord that position to anyone else." Priyanka’s pointed remark during the 2014 election campaign, declaring that "It’s not a 56-inch chest, but a broad heart that is needed to lead the country," remains etched in memory. Though known for her calm demeanour, Priyanka has shown she can wield sharp words when the situation demands.  

During her visit to meet the family of the Hathras gang-rape victim, Priyanka reminded the country of another Indira Gandhi. Her determination to cross police barricades brought back memories of Indira's famous Belchi visit to meet with surviving victims of atrocities perpetrated there against 'untouchables'. Similarly, her journey to meet the families of farmers killed during the farmers' protests also garnered national attention. These visits, often marked by her defiance of BJP-led state governments, showcased her resolve to stand by the oppressed, even in the face of significant opposition.

In every gesture, in every word, Priyanka reminds us of her grandmother, Indira Gandhi. If Priyanka can live up to the weight of the hopes placed upon her, the future of Indian politics may very well belong to her.
