George Foreman, who passed away recently, was a powerhouse both in and out of the boxing ring. A two-time world heavyweight champion and Olympic gold medalist, he built a career marked by dominance, setbacks, and an extraordinary comeback. Beyond sports, he found success as an entrepreneur, TV personality and pastor. However, his life was also shadowed by controversy, including allegations of sexual abuse involving minor girls.
Foreman, better known as Big George, first gained global recognition in 1968, winning Olympic gold in Mexico City. His professional career took off soon after, and by 1973, he became world champion after demolishing Joe Frazier. Known for his raw power, he seemed unstoppable—until Muhammad Ali stunned him in the 1974 ‘Rumble in the Jungle,’ a loss that changed his career trajectory.
In 1977, Foreman retired unexpectedly, dedicating himself to religion and charity. A decade later, he made an improbable return to the ring, and in 1994, at the age of 45, reclaimed the heavyweight title—making him the oldest champion in history, a record that still stands. His transformation from a fearsome fighter to a charismatic veteran won him global admiration.
Outside boxing, Foreman became a savvy businessman. His most famous venture, the George Foreman Grill, made him a household name, selling millions worldwide. He was also a prolific author and television personality.
Foreman’s personal life was equally eventful. Married five times, he had 12 children—seven daughters and five sons—all of whom he named George Edward Foreman to carry on his legacy.
However, in 2022, allegations surfaced against him, with two women accusing him of sexually abusing them as teenagers in the 1970s. One was the daughter of his former manager, while the other was the child of a fellow boxer. They claimed he used coercion and threats to silence them. Foreman strongly denied the allegations, calling them an extortion attempt. His passing meant the case remained legally unresolved.
From his meteoric rise in the 1970s to his stunning comeback in the 1990s, Foreman’s life was one of resilience and reinvention, but also controversy. Whether as a knockout artist, an unlikely champion, or a businessman, he left an indelible mark on boxing and beyond.
