Thiruvananthapuram: President Droupadi Murmu on Thursday unveiled a bust of former President KR Narayanan at the Kerala Raj Bhavan, honouring India’s first Dalit head of state hailing from Kerala.
The ceremony was attended by former President Ram Nath Kovind, Bihar Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, and Kerala Governor Rajendra Vishwanath Arlekar, among other dignitaries, official sources said.

In a brief address following the unveiling, President Murmu reflected on Narayanan’s enduring contributions to the nation, particularly his advocacy for education as a catalyst for social progress.
“Throughout his life, President Narayanan emphasised the role of education in human and national development,” she said.
She stated that Shri Narayanan left a lasting legacy of morality, integrity, compassion, and democratic values. The President emphasised that as the nation progresses towards the goal of Viksit Bharat, it is crucial to ensure that all citizens, particularly the most vulnerable and marginalised, have equal opportunities to fulfil their aspirations.
KR Narayanan, who served as the 10th President of India from 1997 to 2002, was widely respected for his intellect, humility, and commitment to social justice. He passed away on November 9, 2005, aged 85.
The inauguration followed Murmu’s visit to the Sabarimala temple, when her chopper sank into the newly concreted landing pad, drawing flak for security failure.
