The Delhi Government on Thursday unveiled a series of major fuel-saving measures, including mandatory work-from-home days for employees, reduced use of official vehicles, and a push for public transport, following Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s appeal for “wise spending” and conservation of fuel to protect India’s foreign exchange reserves.

The measures are aimed at reducing fuel consumption, easing traffic congestion, and encouraging responsible spending amid concerns over rising import bills and pressure on forex reserves.

Under the new plan, all Delhi government employees will now work from home for two days every week.

The government also announced that at least 50 per cent of official meetings will be conducted online to reduce unnecessary travel.

New rules announced by Delhi government

  • Government employees to work from home for 2 days every week
  • 50% of official meetings to be held online
  • Office timings of the Delhi government and MCD to be staggered
  • “No Car Day” to be encouraged once every week
  • Delhi to observe a special “Metro Day” to promote public transport
  • Petrol quota for officers cut by 20%
  • No purchase of new government vehicles for the next 6 months
  • 58 special buses to run across 29 government colonies for staff transport

Officials said the Delhi government and the Municipal Corporation of Delhi will also introduce staggered office timings to reduce peak-hour congestion on roads and save fuel.

In another key move, the monthly petrol limit allotted to officers has been slashed by 20 per cent. The cap, which earlier stood at 200 litres per month, has now been reduced significantly as part of austerity measures.

The government further said it will launch a public awareness campaign urging citizens to avoid unnecessary fuel consumption and adopt responsible spending habits.

Authorities are also encouraging residents to use the Delhi Metro and reduce private vehicle usage by observing a weekly “No Car Day”.

To support employees using public transport, 58 special buses will operate across 29 government colonies.

The measures come shortly after PM Modi urged citizens to avoid avoidable foreign travel, postpone non-essential purchases like gold and contribute towards conserving fuel and foreign exchange reserves.
