Gurugram: Corporate offices, government and private schools and other institutions in Gurugram have been advised to allow employees and staff to work from home on August 25 following heavy rainfall that triggered widespread waterlogging and traffic congestion across the district.

The advisory has been issued in view of the possibility of further waterlogging and traffic disruption. The district administration has also urged residents to plan their travel accordingly and cooperate with civic agencies carrying out road and drain repair and maintenance work.

Gurugram received around 70 mm of rainfall by 1:30 pm on Monday, with several major roads and junctions affected after about an hour of heavy rain.

Key roads and areas waterlogged

Waterlogging was reported in Narsinghpur, Hero Honda Chowk, Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk and several parts of old Gurugram. Rajiv Chowk witnessed vehicles getting stuck in accumulated water, while school buses and ambulances were also caught in waterlogging on Sohna Road.

Rajiv Chowk, IFFCO Chowk, Railway Road, Sector 5, Old Delhi Road, Mehrauli Road and Basai Road were among the areas badly affected. Naharpur underpass was also waterlogged.

In old Gurugram, waterlogging around Sadar Bazar, Gurdwara Road and Old Delhi Road led to traffic jams that continued into the afternoon. Commuters were seen wading through flooded streets as traffic moved slowly on several routes.

A senior traffic police officer said vehicular movement was choked near the Sirhaul border, Rajiv Chowk, Narsinghpur and some other locations during the afternoon. Traffic police personnel were deployed to manage the situation.

A large stretch of the Delhi-Gurugram Expressway near Cyber Hub, opposite Gateway Tower Metro station, was submerged, affecting traffic movement on the key route. Sheetla Mata Road, which has been among the flood-prone locations in Gurugram this monsoon, was also badly affected.

Civic teams deployed to manage waterlogging

Municipal Corporation officials remained on the ground as the rain continued. Municipal Commissioner Pradeep Dahiya and Additional Municipal Commissioner Yash Jaluka inspected waterlogging-prone locations along with officials from the Gurugram Metropolitan Development Authority, National Highways Authority of India and Municipal Corporation.

Dahiya directed officials to keep pumping arrangements operational in waterlogged areas and ensure that teams reach affected locations immediately after receiving reports of water accumulation. Officials were also instructed to drain the accumulated water promptly.

The work-from-home advisory for August 25 is aimed at reducing traffic on already affected roads while allowing civic agencies to carry out repair, maintenance and drainage work more smoothly.
