Kasaragod: Researchers from the Central University of Kerala (CUK) have been granted an Indian patent for developing a novel catalyst preparation method that could contribute to cleaner fuel production and sustainable chemical manufacturing.

The patent, titled "Method for the Preparation of ITQ-2 Metal Oxy-Hydroxide Composite Materials Thereof", was granted on July 22, 2026, as Indian Patent No. 596368. The innovation was developed by Prof. A. Sakthivel along with his research team comprising Ms. Nimisha N.P. and Dr. Soumya B.N.

The patented invention discloses a modified MWW-type zeolite catalyst based on a delaminated ITQ-2 structural framework integrated with active transition metal nanocomposites. According to the researchers, the catalyst offers improved accessibility to active acid sites and an optimized pore structure, thereby overcoming diffusion limitations commonly associated with conventional microporous catalysts.

The researchers said the technology has the potential to enhance catalytic efficiency in chemical processes while supporting environmentally sustainable production methods. The innovation is expected to create new opportunities for the production of cleaner fuels and value-added chemicals.

Vice Chancellor Prof. Siddu P. Algur congratulated the research team on securing the patent and appreciated their contribution to advancing research and innovation at the university during a meeting held in his office.
